Today we’ll meet Ludmila Borges, GI Sales Manager, Promega Brazil
Tell us a little bit about what your role is at Promega.
I have been with Promega for 16 years and currently work as the Sales Manager for the Genetic Identity business unit in Brazil. My journey with Promega began in 2009 at their former distributor during the transition from PowerPlex® 16 System to the launch of PowerPlex® 16HS System (yes, I was a child). Over the years, my role has evolved, allowing me to engage with forensic DNA laboratories, help shape product development, and support the commercialization of genetic identity solutions. I collaborate closely with forensic professionals, providing both technical and sales support, and have gained invaluable experience through my partnerships with the Department of Justice and other organizations. It is a challenging and rewarding role, and I am proud to contribute to expanding Promega’s impact within Brazil’s forensic science community.
What does a typical day for you look like?
There are no typical days in my career—it’s incredibly dynamic and always full of variety. Most of my time is dedicated to addressing diverse customer demands across Brazil and traveling to meet them. Since the launch of Spectrum, my schedule has been heavily focused on installations, troubleshooting, presentations, and exploring opportunities at institutions with available funding. Additionally, a significant part of my agenda involves working closely with the Department of Justice, which centralizes the demands of Brazil’s forensic database network. Whether it’s solving immediate challenges, collaborating on new opportunities, or supporting forensic laboratories, every day brings something new and exciting.
What is the greatest lesson you’ve learned in your career?
The greatest lesson I’ve learned in my career is the importance of emotional and social intelligence. Being resilient, speaking with empathy, and truly listening—not just to their words but to what customers and colleagues might need to express or release. I’ve learned to be a better listener than a speaker, to be patient with the timing of each person and each process, and to approach every interaction with understanding. Mistakes are part of the journey, and I see them as opportunities to grow. Above all, I’ve realized that every sales relationship is, at its core, a human relationship. It’s about connection, empathy, and mutual respect, which are essential for personal and professional growth.

What’s your favorite thing about your job?
My incredible customers and amazing colleagues at Promega worldwide. In fact, I spend so much time with my customers that they’ve become like family to me. I’m also proud of the high-quality products and services we provide to the forensic community, knowing they make a real difference. Being part of Promega, a company respected and trusted globally, is both an honor and a privilege.

Where do you want to travel to, but have never been?
Southeast Asia, especially the beaches. It’s something I really want to do soon.
If you could have one superpower, what would it be?
It would be the ability to be omnipresent — to be in different places at the same time. I’d love to always be with my family, with my customers, and traveling the world with my friends, all at once.

Describe your “perfect” day. Who are you with? What are you doing?
A perfect day for me would be spending time with my family—my parents, my sisters, and my niece—on a stunning beach. With nice weather, no mosquitos, a shining sun during the day, a breathtaking sunset in the evening, and a full moon reflecting on the sea at night. We’d enjoy delicious food, laugh about nothing in particular, and simply relax together while listening to some good Tom Jobim and Bossa Nova music. For me, it’s all about being with the people I love and enjoying the simple moments.
If you could have dinner with one person, dead or alive, who would it be?
It would be my maternal grandmother. I was only five years old when she passed away, but just before she died, she called me into her room and gave me a gift that I keep with me. I was too young at the time to understand, and I would love the chance to ask her why she chose me and the meaning behind that gift.
What is your favorite sport to watch?
Volleyball and, of course, soccer, when the Brazilian national team is playing. I love being part of the World Cup experience and have had the chance to visit different countries where Brazil has played.
